Charities are start ups too. They need your support as much as companies. We try to focus on the smaller, independent, ones. That’s not to say we don’t admire the likes of Amnesty International or UNICEF, they are awesome and do tremendous work. But most people have already heard of them. We want to focus on the smaller ones set up and run by a few individuals.

Do action (days)
do_action hackathons are community-organised events that are focussed on using WordPress to give deserving charitable organisations their own online presence. Each do_action event includes participants from the local WordPress community coming together to plan and build brand new websites for a number of local organisations in one day.
The wonderful Tess, from forwards.co.uk, and Michael Burridge organised do action day Bristol, which was the first do action day in Europe.
The event created websites for 5 fantastic local charities in Bristol. Training was also provided to enable the charities to use WordPress and manage their own content.
Gympanzees
There are 58,000 young people with disabilities within an hour of Bristol, and over 1.1 million in the UK. 84% of children with disabilities cannot access regular leisure facilities so can’t play, exercise or socialise in the same ways as their peers. This not only affects them, but leaves whole families in isolation, with 72% of parents suffering mental health issues as a result.
Gympanzees supports them and their parents with remote guidance, access to specialist equipment and vital support systems.
